Vacation time on Maui was highlighted by a whale of a day! I could not resist showing off these photos from my whale watching tour. Come enjoy these magnificent mammals that I captured with my Nikon D80.
Here on Maui nearly 75% of humpbacks come here for the winter. They weigh up to 45 tons, but check for yourselves and see how graceful they look in these pictures. I will post more at a later date.
One interesting fact learned was that whales typically breech or fly out of the ocean because they have lots of barnacles on their body and when they jump out of the water they are trying to remove them. I guess if you have to itch you might as “whale” make a big splash!
Great shots. You had to really stay ready and alert to capture them. I always thought they jumped for fun. Barnacles are not fun….

I was surprised by that also! Seeing the Humpback Whales has certainly been the highlight of the trip. I will share more upon return to Home. It’s been a great trip, but I do tire easily. Hope the snow has not been horrible where you live!

I am sooo jealous! It’s a dream of mine to be in Maui for the whale migration. Someday. Meanwhile, thanks for the preview.
