For Luke

Luke watching his brother at Little Bit Therapeutic Riding Center!

Ten years ago Luke was nominated for NARHA Child Equestrian of the Year. Here is a letter giving voice to Luke as a horseman:
How do you describe a rider like Luke? His impish smile, his sense of humor, his serious, quiet moments…actually, he is a very typical 9-year-old boy. But he is autistic and when he rides at Little Bit, he lets us, his volunteers, into his world. He has opened up to us and shared his world with us. In return, we have taught him about horses, and riding, and control.
Two weeks ago, I was able to teach Luke to lead his horse on his own. In the past, I stood between him and his steed, J.R. Luke would take jaunty steps, lag behind or run ahead. That Thursday night, however, I handed him the lead rope and coiled it carefully in his hand. With his other small hand on the lead, I gave him the control. He walked with J.R., matching his steps and stride.
Luke has learned a lot about control since he started riding at Little Bit. He used to need reassurance that he would see mom or dad after class-depending on who brought him-as the ritual would begin each week:
“Go see mama? Go see mama?” he would ask with concern, as his eyes darted from his instructor and back and forth to his side walkers.
“Mama later, Luke,” Andrea, his side walker, would reply in her calming voice.
Sometimes, he would get pretty upset and agitated at the idea that mom or dad was not at his side at that moment. As time passed though, he would mimic the whole conversation, reassuring himself that all was OK in his world. “Go see mama”!…Mama later!” He would recite over and over.
I have volunteered at Little Bit for over ten years, and worked with many riders and volunteers. This rider has provided staying power. Luke has brought three of us volunteers together as “Team Luke.” I usually lead, and Andrea and Michelle work as side walkers. We are actually in danger of losing our volunteer jobs as Luke masters his riding skills and refines his balance. He is taking control.
I think that is what has been so special about Luke. He is so charming that his three volunteers keep coming back for him, season after season. We have all formed a bond that will be broken by the very fact that he learning and progressing each week. That is the good news and the bad news all rolled together! We have seen the progress and the great work his instructors do with him. Our goal is for Luke to have full control of his horse. He will get there; sooner than later. In the meantime, however, he highlights the week for me, Andrea, and Michelle.
We are looking forward to summer session, as that is the last time we will be together as the “team.” Michelle will head off to college in the fall. And Luke will probably not need side walkers by the end of this next session. But for now, I will treasure the trail rides, the obstacle courses, and the warm up sessions of “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes.” He has touched our lives and in turn, we hope we have touched his!
A special thanks goes out to Helene, Andrea, and Michelle for making beautiful memories for me.

About Linus

Linus is my English Springer straight from Heaven. He has been my constant companion for almost 14 years. Recently at a visit to his veterinarian, the doctor mentioned that she only sees one or two English Springers like Linus a year. Perhaps it is because they are a hunting dog and folks are just not interested in this breed. For myself, he has been a godsend.

Recently I took down a fence in the backyard and Linus was so funny to go past where the old fence used to be. I guess it is true you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Actually maybe you can. Check out my photos of Linus finally adventuring out into new territory in my garden that has been off-limits from him.

A Hoarse Blogging Voice

Linus contemplates his blogging voice's next big post!

Linus contemplates his blogging voice’s next big post!

Every time I watch my favorite sports team play, I have a tendency to get overzealous and my voice go hoarse. It hit me that my husky, raucous, and guttural voice that takes place of my normal one is not strong any longer, but a weak form of what was once there.

Is this what we do in our blogging at times? Is it that my voice may come across too strong or too opinionated? At other times, my blog may become weak because I do not tackle the blogging topic with full veracity. Truth for me though may not be the same truth for another. Yet we all know that there are universal truths in our world.

After taking a break from the daily blogging world the last 2 months , I have come to realize I prefer to allow myself freedom to write as I choose. As an individual I am as complex as they come. This brings for interesting thoughts that flow in my head and scream to come out. It is in my blogging I can find voice, yet learn to tame it so I do not go hoarse. You would think going gusto for the team and screaming with all your might for them to win is an awesome thing. I suppose it is, but at the end of the game and may I add at the end of this game we call life, does that hoarse voice show strength or weakness? All I know is that my throat could do well to have a throat lozenge just about now.

Happy Blogging Friends.

Normalcy

The state of being normal as defined by cuddling with my furry friend and breathing a bit slower this week. May we look at our animal friends today and thank them for their unconditional love. I don’t know about you, but when I spend time with my Linus- I laugh more!

Every Morning

Photo taken on the farm of my husband’s parents. Nature is so beautiful here.

Every morning I get up out of bed, I look out the window. Most mornings it is pitch black because I am with my kids as they get ready for school. On the weekend, I have the luxury of sleeping in. As I awake, my first glimpses may be the beginning of light from a distant, the softness of the grass in the yard, or baby birds eyeing my feeders. It is in this I reflect on God’s creation. This week as I prepare for my women’s group, the subject is on God’s presence.
In one of the most well-known stories of the Bible in the book of Job, we learn of a man who loved God. Despite all this love he has for God, God allows Job to lose absolutely everything. I can not even imagine what he must have felt like. I have lost many things, but not everything like him. Job is left miserable with the loss of his children, money, and his health. Despite it all, Job wonders why me but he never curses God. Finally God responds to Job through nature itself.
If you have time to read Job 38, it is here that God engages Job to look to the night sky and the clouds of a summer’s day. He than takes him on a wonderful adventure of nature itself and its animals. It is in God’s safari that Job is refreshed in his belief. Can you imagine being lifted up and allowed to see all things created through the wonder of God’s eyes? There is so much more to God than only nature, but it was the way HE chose to show Himself to Job.
Thanks to all of you that write and bring to life a bit of yourself through your stories and photography. I do believe their is the divine in all of this we call life. God chose the Bible to tell us so much. It is through pain and hardship, nature beckons us back to Him. By the way everything was restored to Job. I suppose God could have put on a professor’s cap to teach Job, but He chose to teach through his own Handiwork. I like those kind of lessons myself. I don’t have to take notes.

Resilience

DOG TREATSOverwhelmed does not come close to my thankful spirit after all of your well wishes in regards to not only my dog’s health, but also for myself. I wanted to report that today Linus would not eat for me this morning. I was worried but later decided to try a different strategy. I fed him one piece at a time very slowly and then finally I put some dog food in his bowl and he got up. I am really pushing the food and giving him his Christmas treats in a more abundant amount than I would usually do. I hope he can gain 10 percent of the weight he has lost. Thank you everyone for your support!
One thing for sure that can be learned about going through tough times is to be resilient. You know the person who gets knocked down and than learns to get up even stronger than before. Please forgive me if I tell you that I am not as strong as I once was. Yet what I will say —I was able to gain empowerment from you all. I would see a comment from one of you and it would be just what I needed to hear. God to me works through people.
Another interesting moment I had two nights ago was my neighbor who is Russian knocking on my door crying. She needs to have a serious surgery and she knew that I am a nurse. To tell you the truth after living in my cul de sac for 10 years, I had very rarely spoken to her as she is very private. Tonight was different and I was able to comfort her. I spoke with her at length on what to expect and gave her a hug and also cried with her. I also encouraged her that she will be fine. It was just a couple of days ago I talked about being kind to a neighbor ( https://alesiablogs.wordpress.com/2013/01/08/back-to-reality/ ) and here I was doing just that. I thank God for that opportunity. It feels good to help another. When we help others, we are entertaining angels I have been told. Just maybe some of you were doing that for me with your comments. One other thing I am humbled yet again to have been nominated for the Beautiful Blogger Award. Thank you to ( http://scvincent.com/awards/ )and soon I will fulfill my obligation with that award.

SAD

Today I took my beloved Linus, my English Springer, to his vet. Our vet has known us since Linus was an infant ( oh I mean puppy). He has been under the weather. He has been sick before and has bounced back. This time was slightly different. He has lost 20% of his body weight.
It was strange that I would not notice that he lost so much weight. The doctor did say Linus is at the end of his days, but not yet the “real” end. So we are beefing him up to live out his glory days with gusto. He is on a couple of medications right now also. She also informed us we do not have to give him the dreaded vaccinations as they are a detriment to his old age. Now I wonder what the immunization gods would think of such a thing in the human population? Anyway we are helping our little man out the best we can and need your prayers. Thank you WordPress Friends. I know how much you enjoy his life as I have shared my favorite photos with you all on numerous occassions ( https://alesiablogs.wordpress.com/2012/11/15/napblopomo-rocks-for-linus/ ) Those shots on the link were taken when he became the first legal pot smoker in Washington State!
By the way Linus’s vet said she only sees a handful of English Springers these days. It seems folks do not want the dogs that had a “purpose” that much anymore like hunting etc. They prefer the labradoodle! They are cute, but not a breed.

Genealogy is not only for HUMANS!

The Love of the English Springer goes way back in our family.

The Love of the English Springer goes way back in our family.

Thirteen years ago when my husband brought our dog Linus home, we knew there was just something about him. My husband was really drawn to him immediately. After I began my genealogy studies I think I began to realize why my husband liked English Springers so much. We found out Dan’s grandpa Russell raised English Springers. My husband states he knew nothing of this until I produced a photo of his grandfather with a litter of them! Maybe that explains our Love of our English Springer! The apple did not fall far from the TREE or maybe this is poetry in motion. Only God can explain such mysteries. Imagine my husband’s surprise when he looked at this photo.

Bible Thumping Linus

Nature is very meaningful to me and I know God is among the trees and animals in nature. If you get this in email form, please be sure to click into my blog today as I have SNOW falling right now!  It is so cool.

Today, Linus my precious dog reminded me (note photos below) to make sure I share with my followers that I do wish all of you a very Merry Christmas.   I know that many of you have different faiths and I actually enjoy reading what many of my blogs I follow say about their life and their belief system.  My belief is Bible based and I truly love the story of Christ the Child.  Growing up Lutheran, I received a firm foundation in my belief but never really committed to my faith until I was just about grown up.  I will be honest with you about my current state of faith and mind.  I do not feel like I have any.  Yet I do not go by my feelings.  Today is a reminder that all of us should love one another, take care of the sick, feed the poor, and lift up those in need.  This is truly what Jesus the Christ did in His ministry on earth. Where ever you are I hope you will enjoy how my nature around me reminds me of my faith.  I am usually kind of silly so enjoy these photos taken with my Panasonic DMC-ZR1 in that spirit:2012-12-06 14.22.39
